Seems like most GI illnesses come from poor sanitary habits. Something
most of us (myself included) are guilty of on the trail at times.
Cooking pot not quite washed enough, hands not cleaned thoroughly enough
before cooking, etc. Instead of a heavy filter, a good investment might
be a small vial of the waterless, alcohol based hand cleaner. Next long
distance hike, I plan on taking it. Had a bout of the trekker trots on
the AT, and it was not fun. (Including a fever, swollen glands, lethargy
and the chills. Luckily there was an honest to goodness Italian deli
just off the trail when I finally got over the trots and I had an extreme
case of the munchies!)
