Rare and out of the way is a generous descriptions of ATMs in Maine. Before
you have an ATM, you first have to have electricity, and then you need a
phone line, and of course you need to have a bank nearby to bring you money.
Many places in this beautiful state are short on all four :). Some of the
larger towns even don't do ATMs well.  Nothing quite like the ATM inside the
Antique store in Virginia that's closed except for on Saturday from
9-9:30am...

Mainers prefer good hard cash, though trail towns will accept small
denomination travelers checks and the occasional credit card. Don't count on
that Visa working though, even if the commercial does say it's "everywhere
you want to be."
