ok, let me rephrase that then.  all thu-hikers were once non-thru-hikers 
before they were thru-hikers.  thus, they know what it's like to be a
non-thru-hiker.  non-thru-hikers were never thru-hikers.  that is why they
are called non-thru-hikers.  they don't know what it's like to be
thru-hikers.

i didn't realize this would become a discussion on semantics.  i was just
trying to get to a point about wisdom.
