[at-l] Bear at Low Gap in Georgia



On June 16, 2000 reports were received that indicated that a nuisance bear
was making successful raids on hikers' food bags in the vicinity of the
shelter located on the AT at Low Gap, GA.

One report related that the bear had entered the shelter at night to get at
food bags that had been hung inside the shelter. It was also reported that
the bear had stolen food bags that had been hung outside the shelter in
trees, and that it had been roaming around tents at night.

No reports were received that indicated any injuries had been sustained by
hikers, or that any physical contact between the bear and hikers had
occurred.
