RE: [at-l] Calendar triple crown

Thanks for the information. I'm willing to bring snow shoes, but for
scheduling purposes I need to understand how many and which miles are going
to be tough. So am I facing a few 10-20 mile sections or am I facing the
entire 100 mile wilderness in snow shoes? Would May be much better? I
really need to start the PCT by June 1st to have any shot at getting through
the northern PCT and CDT before heavy snows close in.

Also, how difficult is winter navigation on the AT? Can the white blazes be
followed in the snow? If I don't have to spend hours making sure I don't
get lost, I can make better time. Strip maps are notoriously difficult to
use with map and compass.

There is just no way that you can hike in the AT in Vermont, New Hampshire
and Maine this time of year without winter gear including snow shoes. I
doubt
that you could average more than a few miles per day and there is still some

danger from spring storms and avalanche.
