Hi Brian

There is just no way that you can hike in the AT in Vermont, New Hampshire 
and Maine this time of year without winter gear including snow shoes. I doubt 
that you could average more than a few miles per day and there is still some 
danger from spring storms and avalanche. The high western mountains could be 
worse.
I think the best (only?) chance is to skip around. Good luck 
As to would it be  acceptable to "claim" the triple having skipped around?  
TO WHOM? If it acceptable to you that is all that matters.
