Re: [at-l] Porcupines

This reminds me of a journal entry I read last summer at Kid Gore Shelter
about a porcupine encounter on Glastenbury Mtn. Apparently the author set up
camp at the base of the firetower. In the morning, they found all of the cork
chewed off of their Leki handles. The porkie was after the salt on the grips.

A healthy porkie will not chase you, but will probably scramble off for the
nearest tree to climb if it feels it is in danger. It will use it's tail as
a line of defense if attacked. They're vegetarians, but have been know to eat
some really odd things including automobile wiring harnesses, tires(personal
experience on this one) and now Leki cork handles. Porkies are nocturnal and
make snorting and grunting noises. They do not hibernate.

Porkies will chew toilet seats too....so be sure to shut and lock the door of
any privy you might use.

Hang your salt encrusted gear, boots, pack, and walking sticks.
