Re: [at-l] Happy New Year!

Took me and my new boots (and all my excess body fat) on a New Years Day AT
hike from Route 9 (Keyes Gap) down across the Potomac and up into Harpers
Ferry. Then I had to hike back. Had a lovely sunset. After that it got
dark. Slows ya down, some, darkness does.

Got (gratefully!) back to the car and did some stuff with my map that I
should have done at the other end of the outing: a 12.5-mile round trip is
probably excessive for a senior blonde fat lady's afternoon hike.

Certainly, two days later, that's the concensus of the joints and muscles.
(Definitely including those that employed the poles.)

Now my second pair of boots has had the same intro to the Trail my first
ones had. It was real interesting to wander along remembering my excitement
at those first, experimental walks on the AT. Wore sneakers and a sundress
for the first one! May 1997. Didn't take water or a jacket until about my
third try. Just my native stupidity and the thrill of the unknown. I did
that six-mile stretch of not particularly challenging Trail in four separate
day hikes, back then. May I never pooh pooh anyone else's first steps!
