[at-l] Y2K Trip Report

Short...

12/31 - Drove up to the Mt Everett Reservation outside of South Egremont
Ma, hiked up the road to past Guilder Pond under mostly cloudy skies.
Chugged up over Mt Everett, and then down some rough footing with icy
patches to Race Brook. Ran into three young guys out dayhiking, and kept
leapfrogging from there down to Sages Ravine. The usual awesome views off
the cliffs at Race Mt, with just enough sunshine coming through for a short
lunch break on the last overlook. Sages Ravine was truly beautiful,
decorated with ice for the New Year - icicles off the rocks ledges and
rocks in the stream garlanded with icy skirts... Then the first set of
steps turned into an ice fall... Hmmm... Managed to work around it, onlu
about 15 feet.
Gee, the climb up Bear Mt didn't seem so bad... lots of dayhikers going by,
and a few backpackers. Great views and warm sunshine, tempted to nap on
top. On down the ridge to arrive at Mt Riga shortly before the sun dropped
behind the ridge. One couple camped nearby, and one mystery tent that was
gone in the morning...
Simple, hot supper to warm up, and some hot cocoa with Captain Morgans for
desert. A million stars in the sky, and the lights of Ct below, fireworks
booming off in the distance.
Another beautiful trail sunrise in the morning, breath turned to snow on
top of the sleeping bag. Nice hot breakfast, and then back to Mt
Everett.... just beautiful...
Except that the cold really seemed to bother my knees....

Happy Hiking, Skeeter
