Jeff,
You might try looking up a hostel.  Unlike in Europe, you don't necessarily
need to be under 27 to use them.
Many are listed at:
http://www.hostels.com/
The site is indexed by country and city, it's not a bulletin board. I've
used it before.
One of the bigger ones down there is Banana Bungalow.... they and others
have an email address and map at their website.  Many hostels operate
shuttlevans to /from the airports and bus/train stations, or can give you
bus info to get there, so ask.
Plus, ensure that they offer rooms to Americans, because I once did make a
reservation at one in an American big city, but then they mentioned that
they were for the international crowd only, and require passports to check
in.....when I said I was an American they said, 'sorry'.
Who knows, maybe you'll meet up w/ some other thruhikers.......
