[pct-l] snow report for the san gabriels

I was up off highway 2 (Islip Saddle) hiking yesterday. Temperatures were perfect, although a bit on the warm side by afternoon. I did get a killer sunburn (hope everyone is using their sunscreen). My snow report is that there is still some snow and ice on the top of Baden Powell, but not enough to pose any problems if you're careful. Chances are, it will be gone soon -- I talked a couple who had been up the week before and they said it was much reduced in just that week.

Highway 2 is still closed between Islip Saddle and Big Pines, making car shuttling difficult. However, the road was freshly tarred, and I would assume it will be open by the next weekend.

There were a few snowy/icy patches between Little Jimmy and Mt. Williamson, but nothing actually on the trail. The trail marker for the PCT where it splits off from the Mt. Williamson trail has been removed (rather forcibly -- looks like someone wanted a souvenir) but there are rock cairns marking the trail.....I missed it the first time, but wasn't really looking for it either -- my quest was the mountain top.

I will be at Islip saddle next weekend in hopes that there will be some hikers coming through. I have cookies, banana bread, juice, soda, water, and maybe a couple other, as yet undecided items to be handed out to anyone who walks through. If any of you talk to thru hikers, please let them know to look for me next weekend at the saddle. If any of you are in the area, feel free to stop by for some homemade goodies.

As long as I live, I'll hear waterfalls and birds and winds sing. I'll interpret the rocks, learn the language of flood, storm, and the avalanche. I'll acquaint myself with the glaciers and wild gardens, and get as near the heart of the world as I can.
