I think the best way for your family to contact you on the trail is to be
proactive. You said you'll call them every 3 weeks. That's a long time
between phone calls. Call them from every town. Just to check in. Your
longest stretch between phones will be 10-11 days --- IF you hike the Sierra
without a trip out to Independence or Lone Pine.
Sure, the PCT is more remote than the AT, but there ARE towns. You'll reach
a phone every 3-6 days. You may walk 150 miles between towns, but on the
PCT that's only 6 days. On the AT that might have been 9-10 days.
If your family needs to contact you, their best bet is to KNOW where you
were recently. Call them from every town.
