Though hiking with others is always safer, I have a hard time imagining
illegal immigrants causing trouble for a few reasons. First, these are
people travelling far distances to find work, not crime. Also, backcountry
crime doesn't seem especially profitable. And, the area north of the border
around Campo was heavily monitored by the U.S. Border Patrol when I was there.
Something I was happy to learn on my through hike was, contrary to what
televised news would have you believe, the vast majority of people are not
criminals.
I found being at the Mexican border depressing with it's wall and abundant
surveillance. I prefer to be walking away from it rather than towards it.
