I agree. In reality, the ice ax's most important function is preventing a
fall: it gives you something to grab when you slip, and 95% of the time that
is enough to stop. Learning self arrest helps you when the 5% happens. Kinda
like the weather: you can go unprepared most of the time, but sooner or later
you'll throw snake eyes. If you cross steep snow slopes enough times, it is
inevitable that you will eventually loose your footing and start sliding
