[pct-l] trail tread and other curiosities

Over the course of 2650 miles and given all the varied geology along the way,
it is somewhat likely that the trail would vary from time to time. Sometimes
you have pine needles under foot. Sometimes fir. And sometimes the leaves of
five different oaks. Sometimes obsidian glass. Sometimes there's water
everywhere, sometimes there is none for a gazillion miles. Ditto bugs, rain,
people, rangers, views, horses and alcohol (for stoves). Sometimes the way is
somewhat confusing, but at least 95% is easy to follow.  There are many big
climbs in elevation, but a steady rhythm eventually conquers them all
