Good advise, but don't reach down and pick up the sand right next to the
rattler, of course.  Maybe it might be better to just kick the sand at
them.

Rattlesnakes have no eyelasges and detest any kind of sand or dust. When
you encounter one tossing a small handfull of sand their way will
encourage them to quickly leave the vicinity without any physical damage
to either you or the snake.
