That's Kearsarge Pass, not Bishop Pass, you use to get out to Onion Valley 
trailhead.  And I think it's more like 9 miles each way from the trail to 
Onion Valley.  In ''97, we resupplied at Bishop.  Went out over Bishop Pass 
from Le Conte Canyon.  It's quite a way out through Dusy Basin but the 
scenery is spectacular.  Shouldn't expect much difficulty hitching from South 
Lake into Bishop.
