Hi everyone!
There is no "Official" web page for Baxter. The best page I know of is put
up by a Ranger and is at http://www.katahdinoutdoors.com/bsp/
<A HREF="http://www.katahdinoutdoors.com/bsp/">Baxter State Park Unofficial
Page</A>
All the addresses and phone numbers you need. Links to rules and regs, too.
Reservations for camping in 2000 can be made in person, or by mail, starting
Monday, Jan 3rd.
The first day at Park Headquarters is a zoo, (been there, done that) the
motel across the street is full of folks trying to reserve cabins and choice
camping spots for popular dates. You can pretty much give up on renting a
cabin if you do not participate in 'First Day' at Headquarters. You can mail
for camping reservations, but who knows when they'll get around to dealing
with your requests. I'll be up there the Friday of the first week to do some
snowshoeing and to make several reservations for the upcoming season in
person.
The two Daicey Pond Lean-tos (free to thru-hikers) are perhaps the smallest
on the trail, and are a few hundred yards from the pond and ranger station.
The view is of the dayuse parking lot. There's several tent sites at the back
of the field, much betterer, imho.
If you visit the Park to day hike, plan on lining up at the gate before it
opens on Fridays and weekends. The popular trailheads fill up fast and are
closed quickly.
Call the nice folks at Baxter State Park, at 207-723-5140 they are wonderful
and knowledgeable.
I've been backpacking and hiking in Baxter for 30+ years, and if I can help
anyone out with information, please feel free to email me.
