You're not even in the competition.
Last year I was at a shelter in Vermont when a haggard couple labored
in, collapsing under the biggest internals I have ever seen. (I mean, I
could have bivied in one of 'em.) I assumed they were out for the
weekend, but they were actually northbound from Springer. They opened
their packs, and soon half the shelter was knee deep in gear. I am not
kidding. After listening to a whole lot of complaining, I worked up the
courage to ask how much their packs weighed. She cut me off at the pass:
"I don't know, and I don't want to know. All I know is that I have
everything I would want here to do the hike." Of course, her poor
husband/pack animal could hardly walk...

BTW, she chided me for carrying one Nalgene bottle: "A Gatorade bottle
would be lighter, you know. Everyone uses them." I was tempted to throw
my pack at her, but it wasn't heavy enough to hurt...
