I have never had to wear full crampons in a situation where there were any
large areas of exposed rock. The few times I have encountered such a
situation, I have used instep crampons designed for emergency use. Although
not as effective on ice as full crampons, they still provide a measure of
insurance against slipping while enabling you to walk comfortably over rocks
as well.

If the situation is as precarious as you describe however, I would wear the
full crampons and keep them on....
