the hikers are (by the numbers):

1) mother of hiker 2 & grandmother of hiker 4
2) father of hiker 4
3) mother of hiker 4
4) the son of hiker 2 & 3

so i, 2, 3 are hiking with their son
& 4 is only one hiking with his father
