Re: [at-l] Books---

There are *definitely* better books to suggest as representative of the AT
experience OR to assuage fears in non-participant family types. Larry
Luxumbourg (geez, I mutilate that name every time), Lynn Setszer (another I
can missspell), and Rolly Muesser come to mind, as well as Jean's. And BTW,
Our Gal RamBunny (AT'00, countdown at 183 days, thankyouvermuch) hoots at
the thought that her friend Jean would charge -- by the mile or the
     footstep, anyway?
ALSO, let a copy of Lynne Wheldon's "5,000,000 Steps" video -- or ANY of
his videos, make the rounds of those keeping the home fires burning.
They're low key, to be sure, but they're great. Just skip any "live"
presentations that happen to present themselves. (<===Yes, that's a
not-too-oblique Trail Days reference, for those who don't know.)

Anywho, Deeds, Stefanos (On the web), Wheldon, Setzer, Muesser, Luxumburg,
Brill, Shaeffer, the whole Rodale thing.....There's a great crop of AT
books these past few years. But Bryson is NOT on the list. NOT.

Kristen, the book that worked best for me is Jean Deeds's book, "There Are
Mountains to Climb". I hear murmurings about her charging people to hike with
her now, and maybe charging to speak to groups, but my mother, who was always
terrified about my hiking, has read it twice. Now when I go out, she just says,
"Bye." Jean is just about my age, too. Although she's a fellow Hoosier, I've
never gotten a chance to see her. I remember when she was out the first year,
friends in Indy told me about her. Later, they told me about her broken ankle.
She wrote articles for the Indy paper on a fairly regular basis. Leslie
