[at-l] Removing Cooked-On Duct Tape Goo

I've got cooked-on duct tape goo on the side of one of
my Nalgenes as well as inside the bottle holster
attachment for my backpack.

For me, wrapping the duct tape around the side of my
Nalgene was a bad move. The goo is so bad sometimes I
can't get the Nalgene out of the holster very easily
because the now melted goo is holding the Nalgene
bottle tight.

I left the holsters home for several hikes and for me,
I like the holsters better and they're only 3.5 oz.

Finally figured out how to get that baked on goo off
everything.

Goo-Gone, my normal goo remover, did not work. That's
the first time I've seen Goo-Gone fail at removing
goo. Plus, Goo-Gone stinks so badly (is it just me
that hates the smell of Goo-Gone?).

I went to the department store (Meijers) and found an
elderly gentleman in the paint/hardware department
(your first requirement for success -- don't be a
typical man, learn to ask questions, find an expert).
Now this was the type of guy you might think worked at
Ace Hardware at one time or another.

Initially I told him I was looking for mineral spirits
since one of the guys on another list suggested trying
that. He took me over to where the paint thinners were
located (I'll do all the thinninin' around here Babba
Louie). Showed me the smallest container of mineral
spirits they had -- a gallon of it. Don't need a
gallon of anything.

So he takes me over to the left, points at a container
and tells me 'Krud Kutter' will work. Says it works on
everything. Cuts right through it. I look at it and
it's $4.50 versus the snazzier packaged all-purpose
remover just below it at $2.50. The clerk says he's
not trying to sell me anything but he knows the Krud
Kutter will take it off.

Well, I bought Krud Kutter because I liked the name.
Makes me sound like I might fit into the Ace Hardware
crowd at some time in the future. Need to get some
bibs if I'm going to fit into that scene...

Got it home and yes, Krud Kutter worked. Foams up,
doesn't stink, doesn't seem to damage any of the
nylon. But it needs several applications (all Y2K
compliant I might add).

At first it was hard to get down inside where the crud
was located in the bottle holster so after cleaning
the duct tape goo off the side of the Nalgene I
sprayed extra Krud Kutter on the Nalgene and slipped
the Nalgene into the holster and pushed it up and down
for a while. But that didn't create enough friction to
remove the duct tape goo.

....oh behave people!

I was able to get the one bottle holders turned inside
out and that allowed me to hit it with the Krud Kutter
and an abrasive sponge. The other bottle holder is a
different style and doesn't turn inside out -- I had
to fiddle with it using the abrasive sponge and my
hand to get enough pressure on the goo to make it come
off with Krud Kutter.

Krud Kutter also "Removes graffiti, gum, shoe polish,
tar, oil, asphalt, stickers, labels, lipstick, crayon,
marker, scuff marks and more...!"

Bringing you the latest in cleaning sensations...
