Trail Days '99 will be held on May 14, 15 and 16 and will be dedicated
this year to Earl Shaffer, hiker extraordinaire and the first person to
hike the entire Appalachian Trail. Mr. Shaffer decided that once was not
enough, however, and in 1998 did it again--50 years later at age 79! He
will be our honored guest and will present slide shows of his hike and
will be giving talks throughout the Trail Days celebration.

For those of you who have not yet joined us for Trail Days, you should
know that we believe in starting the fun early. Thru-hikers will begin
slogging off the Appalachian Trail and into town about a week before the
official festival weekend. Damascus is known as "the friendliest town on
the AT" and we really live up to our reputation during the days leading
up to Trail Days. Our town's shop owners, bed and breakfasts, churches
and restaurants welcome everyone with open arms.

Throughout the week, there will be trail related special events, talks
and slide shows but the real fun begins May 14-16. In previous years,
the hiker talent show, hiker parade, street dance and the many craft and
food vendors have been a hit! We'll keep you posted as we get dates and
events confirmed. We hope to see you at Trail Days '99.
