RE: [at-l] enviromental fair project thingy

Many people think that overuse is the biggest threat to the Trail (as a
concept). In most places the overuse has not affected the environment too
heavily yet, but the frequency of seeing other people damages the
"wilderness experience" for many. Of course there are isolated places where
severe environmental damage has occurred, due to hurricances, ice storms,
gypsy mothes, illegal usage, etc.

It is probably difficult for someone who has hiked primarily western trails
to fully appreciate the problems/differences of eastern trails. Eastern
trails are primarily hiking only, tended not to be as well graded, wetter
(Pacific Northwest excepted), greener with much more understory vegetation,
through more heavily populated areas with frequent access points, etc.
