     I would suggest buying GOOD SOCKS that fit well (thorlo trekkers or 
     smart wool, both with thorlo/similar coolmax liners), and then just 
     getting any ol' boot that'll do. You'll maintain your comfort with the 
     socks, while honing your requirements on the cheapies -- which you can 
     also use as "street" boots without guilt.

Hello,
     
I am looking for some advice.... I hike 2 - 3 times per year with the 
longest hike being no more than 1 week.  The heaviest pack I will carry is 
in the neighborhood of 40 lbs.
     
How might I go to select the hiking boot that is proper for me?  Cost *is* 
a consideration.
