Re: [at-l] In season

Well well well...it is that time of year, isn't it?

Don't feel bad for bringing the subject up Datto.....it happens
every year.
You might be pleased to know that your fears may be misplaced.
SomeONE was shot here in Pa. during deer season last year and
it ruined our streak of safety. For years I've asked folks to show me
evidence of the numbers of hunting related deaths. Some one did
give me an excellent link but it's been buried with Iggy Sr.so I can't
pass it along. But the long and the short of it is that dozens of folks
die each month in car crashes but here in Pa., we can go for years
without a hunting related death, if you don't count hunter heart attacks.

Last year we had two hikers killed in falls.

And you mentioned that you need training to drive a car but not to hunt.
Not true in Pa. You must have passed a hunter safety course to get
a license here. But I'm not sure that does much more good than
driver's safety courses. That's where the real danger lies....getting to the
trailhead.
BTW...hiking on the first day or even during the first week of deer season
probably isn't smart. Kinda like driving after midnite on Fri or Sat nites
when people are leaving the bars. I avoid doing either. I'll keep my ears
open for info on the season and pass it along.
And for the record, around here, hunters out- number hikers probably
twenty to one so I'm very grateful to them for plunking down the money
each year to buy the thousands of acres of woods that my trails pass
through (including the AT). The minimal risk they pose to me is weeelll
worth it in my book.
If your stste doesn't manage hunting as well as Pa. does, move <VVBG>.

One more thing, I think that hunter was pulling your leg. Coons are
nocturnal.
A hunter without a dog wouldn't have a chance of finding one in the daytime.
k.
