I keep my sleeping bag in that compartment, and i also put it in a stuff
sack. The zipper area is not waterproof, so if i get caught in a shower
without my pack fly on, water can seep in and get my bag wet (which is
down and so that would be bad). I also like to keep it in the stuffsack
for organizational reasons - i can probably stuff other small items in
that area as well. It also makes packing up a heck of alot easier.

I think your sleeping bag is heavier, and should go here instead so it
pulls the weight down to your hips. at least i think that's how it's
supposed to work. If the pack is big enough, and your sleeping bag small
enough, you could probably squish a fleece or a rain jacket in there.
