Hi All!
Since I've been lurking for over a year now, I figured it was time to
introduce myself and start asking questions. I'm going to be a senior at
Duke next year and am planning on doing 2-3 months on the AT after
graduation (starting approx. June 1st from Springer). I've done
backpacking in the mountains of NC, but most of that is just overnight or
weekend trips. Usually not with my own gear or a full pack either. So,
seeing as how, I'm working two jobs this summer, I'm going to reward
myself with some light gear.
So, having said that, I've got some questions (the first of many, I'm sure).
1. Sleeping bag recommendations: I'm pretty tall (about 5'11" or so)
and I don't really like mummy bags too much. I really like bags that I
can curl up in and pull my knees up. Any ideas or suggestions about
tall, extra wide bags?
2. Tents: Anybody know anything about the Moss Helix? I'd like to be
able to pull my pack into the tent with me, but I'd also like to keep the
weight down. I don't like bivy sacks because I don't like being that
confined. The Walrus Swift and Sierra Designs Clip Flashlight are two
others I've been looking at. Opinions?
3. To dehydrate or not to dehydrate: Is dehydrating worth the trouble?
I love fresh veggies and fruits and am worried about the lack on the
trail. So, next best thing: dehydrating. How much is feasible to
carry? Are there any particular varieties that don't dehydrate well (or
don't keep very long after dehydration) that I should be aware of? Also,
what's this I've heard about dehydrating yogurt or spaghetti sauce? Does
that actually work???
Ok, enough questions for now. Hehe! More to come later.
