RE: [at-l] NYC: Metro-North to AT?

Look at http://www.nynjtc.org/no-car.html for a list of the many places that
can be reached by public transportation from NYC. This list is by no means
complete. In general the list is growing with some exciting new prospects on
the horizon. The New York Walkbook has transportation alternatives listed
for all hikes that we could find. The New York Walk Book 6th edition is hot
off the presses and may not be in bookstores yet, but is available from the
Trail Conference (see pages above). It used to cover both NY and NJ but it
was split into separate volumes. The NJ one will come out this summer
(hopefully).

The two normal places to access the AT from are Manitou station (just north
of Bear Mt. Bridge) on the Hudson Line and the Appalachian Trail stop on the
Harlem Line. Depending on your hiking speed, this will take a 2 to 5 days, a
little under 50 miles. Both stops are whistle stops with limited service but
there are full service stations that are not too far, Peekskill and either
Pawling or Harlem Valley/Wingdale.
