Hi :)

I live about 10 miles from Erwin.  We've done a few sections in the area, like
from Nolichucky River to Iron Mountain Gap, Sams Gap, etc.  I had not noticed
any signs, and to the best of my knowledge, there have been no unusual
concerns about safety in these areas, except maybe physical safety, back when
the Trail was decimated by ice and snow storms and was impassible in places.
Those parts of the Trail are clear now, though.  I would suggest calling the
Nolichucky Hostel, which is right off the Trail in Erwin.  John could probably
give you some information on the subject.  I don't have the number handy, but
I can get it if you need it.
