I hiked in and around that area for several years in the early 90's. Don't
remember any signs saying that you shouldn't camp in a certain area or hike
alone. If there are such signs, it must be due to a particular incident or
incidents, not simply because of fear of the locals. Check with Roan Mtn. park
rangers and ask them.
