[at-l] how do you treat your water?

please let me know what you think
is the best way to prevent illness from
water contaminated  with parasites, viruses,
and other unwelcome and potentially dangerous
elements.
I usually boil it, but that wastes fuel.
I keep iodine for emergencies.
what about filters/purifiers? Which are most effective? most durable, or least durable?
which are the most cost effective?
