"Celebrating 50 Years of Thru-hiking"
an event sponsored by the Town of Hot Springs,
organized by the Mayor's Special Events Committee

<underline>Friday, April 24th
</underline>
Noon - 6PM: Check In at the town's Visitor Center (the
red caboose across from the post office), where you will
receive a schedule of the weekend's events, a name tag with
your year, and you can register for the door prizes which
will be offered on Saturday.
8PM-11PM: Hiker's Campfire and Mountain Music at the Spa
Campground, with music provided by local groups from the
Hot Springs area; hikers are invited to bring an instrument
and join in.=A0
<underline>Saturday, April 25th
</underline>
8AM-3PM: Check in at the town's Visitor Center (the red
caboose across from the post office), where you will receive
a schedule of the weekend's events, a name tag with your
year, and you can register for the door prizes which will be
offered on Saturday.
8AM-10AM: Pancake Breakfast for thru-hikers (free) at the
Hot Springs Community Center, facing the railroad tracks;
sponsored by the Hot Springs Friendship Club.
10AM-11AM: Trailplace Family Reception for users of the
website and subscribers to the ATML, WATL, AT98, ATClubs, and
ATTeens mailing lists, at the Fellowship Hall of the
Presbyterian Church in the middle of town, Dan Wingfoot Bruce
will host, sponsored by the Center for Appalachian Trail
Studies (other internet groups invited to attend).
11AM-Noon: Book Signing, by Earl Shaffer, author of "Walking
with Spring", his notable account of the first thru-hike, at=20
the Bluff Mountain Outfitters store in the middle of town.
Noon: 50th Anniversary Parade; Earl Shaffer, Grand Marshall,
with the local high school band leading an assortment of floats
and vehicles to celebrate the 50th anniversary of thru-hiking=20
... plus a motley contingent of 1998 (and alumni) thru-hikers
"doing their thing".
1PM-3PM: Entertainment and Speaker's Stage with live music,
special guests and speakers (including David Brill, author of
"As Far As the Eye Can See" and Earl Shaffer), drawings for
door prizes; located in area beside the post office in the
center of town. During the program, Earl will be asked to
unveil a bronze plaque in honor of the 50th anniversary of
thru-hiking, to be on permanent display on the Trail in the
middle of town.
3PM-5PM: Hiker Olympics, plus raft races and duck race, at the
Spa Campground; sponsored by the Bluff Mountain Outfitters.
4PM-5PM: Wolves and Wilderness, a slide show and presentation
by Marcas Marx, a "Class of '98" thru-hiker doing a hike to raise
awareness about the red wolf reintroduction project; in the
auditorium of the Presbyterian Church.
7PM-9PM: EARL SHAFFER, shows and narrates his slides from the
first thru-hike in 1948 in the auditorium of the Presbyterian
Church, followed by Earl singing songs about the Trail and the
outdoors; also, other special guests.
9PM-11PM: Hiker's Campfire and Dennebe Drum Group Performance,
at the Spa Campground.
<underline>Sunday, April 26th
</underline>
9:30AM-Noon: Church Services, hikers invited to attend in hiking
attire.
9:30AM - Presbyterian Service
10:30AM - Catholic Service
11:00AM - Baptist Service
12:30PM: Church Dinner (for thru-hikers only) at the Baptist
Church.
2:00PM-3PM: Closing Ceremonies, an ecumenical service and the
first "Blessing of the Trail" ceremony; in the chapel and on
the lawn of the Jesuit Facility. All people of all faiths (or
no faiths) are invited to join in this non-sectarian service of
thanksgiving for the wonders to be seen and the joys to be
experienced along the Appalachian Trail.=A0
