Well, I was going to hold off a while before asking about this, but
since you insist...

Anyone have any experience and/or opions about using a hammock and tarp
as an alternative to a tent or bivvy? It would seem to me that this
approach would help acheive two goals held near and dear by many on this
list: light weight and low impact. Yet in my scan through the archives
of the last year's postings I don't remember the subject coming up even
once.

When I first started thinking about this, what I had in mind was one of
those "ball of string" things, and I was pretty sceptical that it would
be comfortable enough. But in doing some cruising on the net, I've
found some that look to be better quality, but still light weight.
(Check www.hangouts.com or www.hameck.com if you're interested.) But I
still don't know if I could sleep in one, and I guess there's only one
way to find out, so I ordered one.

So leaving that question aside for the moment, this system looks pretty
appealing. Is there some fatal flaw that I'm overlooking that explains
why apparently nobody on the trail camps this way?
