Could this be the next evolutionary step in traveling light? From InfoBeat
News:
*** Bird species carries only essentials on migration
A species of bird which migrates thousands of miles every year has
given new meaning to the term traveling light. New Scientist magazine
said bar-tailed godwits, wading birds about the size of gulls, binge
before their long-haul flights until up to 55% of their weight is fat
and then they reduce the size of their gut, kidney and liver by up to
25% to compensate for the added weight. Researchers think the birds
reshuffle proteins in their bodies before take-off, allowing them to
reduce the food-processing organs. They discovered the secret of the
super efficient flyers by comparing organ weights of a subspecies.
