I think you are a little late in starting a thru hike of the AT this
Summer, unless you are going to do it in the snow.  Which case you will
need a large pack to carry all your cold weather gear.  I would suggest
you look at the Gregory Wind River.  They are a large capacity panel
loader with good rigging.  Dana also has a good rep.  You are right, it
is a very personal choice.  Try on many.
