Monday 6/9 Paul Wolfe Shelter to Calf Mtn. Shelter 11.9 miles
Good Day! It's Janice's Birthday! I got to talk with her on the phone
for about 2 hours. It was good to hear your voice honey. The trail
has been really kickin my ass lately. Feet are sore. Knees swell
without vitamin I. Wierd lookin stuff is growing on my skin under my
hip belt. Pack is heavy - almost sixty lbs. with no tent or sleeping
bag. All of the situations are still within the game plan though. I
never thought that it was gonna be easy. Nice views from near the radio
towers on Bear Den mountain. I spent about an hour flat on my back in
the sun watching cloud formations there. Still backpacking all the
white blazes...

Tuesday 6/10 Calf Mtn. Shelter to Loft Mtn. Campground 20.4 miles.
Good walkin, good weather - 85 degrees! Blackrock was a trip. Pretty
cool. Long day - short nite. Camping with Wrangler. The trail is good...

Wednesday 6/11 Loft Mtn. Campground to Hightop Hut 14.1 miles.
I feel good! Many breaks today... Much food... Spoke with Janice.
I hiked with Wrangler off and on today. About a mile and a half before
the shelter we got hooked up with some of the most excellent trail
magic. Fresh ready to eat Alabama peaches, cold Cokes with ice, and
fresh rye and pumpernicle rolls! Very nice people. I met Goldenfinger
today. He's a retired naval officer - OB-GYN specialist who spent
several years stationed in the Washington D.C. area providing care
for Naval Cadets & First ladies.
Body still hurts, but life is good...

Thursday 6/12 Hightop Hut to Bearfence Mtn. Hut 12.5 miles.
Good Hiking... Several hills... Sun, a little over 2 hours of rain,
then clouds. Thunder in the distance. Very big break at Lewis Mtn.
camp store... Bread - pimento loaf - a six of bush - and another
phone call home. School's out, moving closer to home. Frequent family
visits are in order! I saw scores of deer today.

Friday 6/13 Bearfence Mtn. Hut to Rockspring Hut 11.4 miles.
Nice walking. Short miles with a long lunch and phone call from Big
Meadows Wayside. Many Many deer. Good weather - 85 with afternoon
showers.
