Internal frame packs have tobe much bigger since all the gear is in
the pack. On externals, the sleeping bag, sleeping pad etc are
outside. I am not sure if the pockets are included in the capacity
ratings. If not then you can add the contents of the pockets such
as water bottles tent etc.
Some times a smaller pack is better since it forces you to prioritize
the contents better. It is the same for me with my briefcase. When I
used to carry a larger case I would leave supplies from the last job
that weren't needed for today in the case. With the smaller bag I just
carry what I need and it is much lighter.
