Dave,

You don't have to hike without a stove. It plans on the type of hike
your taking. If it's only for a few days take along a Primus Trail
light stove (7 oz) and a small container of Peak I propaine/butaine (7
oz) total weight 14 ozs.
In my opinion a mere 14 ozs added to the pack for hot coffee and hot
meals is a no brainer. You can cut your weight in other areas. Just my
suggestion. If your talking of a thru hike or long section hike I I
believe it may be hard to find Pro/But. canisters.
I also have a Peak I, Appex II white gas stove which I have used on
hikes. All the pumping, connecting, flamming up and double bagging
the fuel bottle is simply not worth it. With the propaine stove it's
1,2,3 and your cooking. It also brings the water to a boil faster and
the load is lighter. Like I said unless its a thru hike you can't beat
the propaine stove.
Hopefully if I do get the chance to do a thru, propaine canisters will
widely available on the trail.
