RE: [at-l] Light Weight Pack's

Steven,

I kept the original frame (modified) and harness but I made a new bag. =
The bottom, back (next to frame), and flap are made from a single piece =
of waterproof 8 oz. pack cloth. The sides and front of the bag is =
waterproof 2.5 oz ripstop Nylon. To protect the ripstop and add more =
storage, I made 10" high pocket around the bottom of the bag out of =
netting. I also made 2 net pockets on the upper sides of the bag to =
hold water bottles. Total cost of materials < $25.

If you need materials, a good place to order them is from The Rain Shed. =
Call them for a complete catalog of materials. They are good, I've =
known them since we moved there after our AT hike.

better airflow between me and the pack. =20

I took my Kelty Tioga and stripped it to the frame. Then I removed
everything from the frame not necessary. I designed and made new bag =
for
the pack. The new bag has the same internal volume as the Tioga. After
putting it all back together last night, the new pack weights in at 3.5
#'s. Since the new pack is made from waterproof material, I don't need =
to
carry a pack cover. The Tioga with pack cover weighs 5.5+ #'s. The new =
pack
comes in with a weight savings of 2 #'s. <

Did you make your own pack? What kind of material did you use =
(waterproof
ripstop?) I'm thinking of doing the same thing.
