Re: [at-l] Gear List

In the clothing dept., you could save weight and space by ditching the jungle
fatigues - sounds like a lot of extra weight and redundancy with the capilene
bottoms; get rid of one 50/50 t-shirt (you won't be wearing t-shirts very
much at first anyway); two outer socks are fine - mail two pair ahead a few
weeks if you're worried about wear - carry liner socks to compensate,
changing them daily; Reebok Amazon sandals sound pretty heavy - if they're
more than a few ounces and you plan on using them only around camp, that's
alot of unneeded extra energy expended during the day to carry them. Get
those imititation Tevas from KMart that everyone's advocating (I had trouble
ditching my real Tevas for the longest time. When injuries dictated a lighter
pack, though, I came to realize the lack of function of these weight objects
for my purposes).
I noticed you're carrying a water-resistant jacket, AND a poncho. So you'll
most likely wear the poncho on most rainy days, and save the jacket for
cold, windy (but not necessarily rainy) conditions. This isn't the most
efficient approach, especially considering these aren't light items in the
grand scheme of the total pack weight. If you really want the poncho idea,
you could pick up a cheap, uncoated/laminated nylon anorak for the wind, and
ditch the Hydrenaline. Or spend more money and get a waterproof/breathable
jacket with good ventilation, and you'll also have a windblocker without the
need for a poncho. But this may be a bit trivial, esp. if you have no plans
of spending much extra money to streamline your weight.
Food for thought: most top-of-the-line, load monster, bell&whistle backpacks
are, unloaded, the equivalent of carrying two summer-weight tents extra cargo all the way to Maine. (not saying I'm
not guilty!)...
