[at-l] beer and trail magic

Rachel said, "My only criteria is COLD beer. I defy any thru-hiker who has
sent in a list of their favorite premium brands, to turn down a cold
Milwaukee hand-delivered to you on the trail during the heat of the summer."

A few stories of beer and trail magic - When I was hiking through Harriman -
Bear Mtn State Parks I stopped early one morning to take a picture of the
Hudson River. When I turned around to put my camera away, sitting next to
my pack was an unopened bottle of Guinness, just waiting for a passing
hiker. I didn't care if it was warm, that became lunch.

Then there was the couple (the Happy Feet) that greeted us at Matts Creek
shelter saying "Beer or coke?" They had cookies too!

And Lazy, the Eckville hostel keeper who slacked us up to Bears Rocks and
met us with a cooler of beer and coke and his album of AT pictures. A great
way to spend an afternoon.

Then there was the Fireman's Club in Pennsylvania that invited us to be
guests (after a small hint on our part) when we reached Port Clinton on a
Sunday. They had the only beer in town - 35 cents a glass. (Pennsylvania
has some funny blue laws.)

Later, up at Rainbow Lakes in Maine, some fishermen camped at the lake
greeted us with the immortal words, "Follow us to the beer". It seems that
they had had supplies flown in that day, one case of beer per person, per
day. They offered us a case on the spot. We left most of it for the next
group of thruhikers.

I never drank beer until I went on the trail - now it is merged in my mind
with the many times it was part of the magic of the trail. Warm or cold,
imported or Bud, it didn't matter.
