First of all, we need to remember that we're on *vacation* whether we're
out for a week or thru-hiking for several months. To others we encounter,
we are using leisure time, which they may have little of. We owe it to
trail-lovers everywhere to make sure that our conduct is above reproach,
that we are always courteous and express appropriate gratitude for any
kindnesses. An encounter with a hiker should leave the general public
wanting to meet more of us! We depend on them for a lot, not just
assistance, but political support for trails too.
