Virginia in May, 65 miles on the Appalachian Trail from Mt. Rogers  
Headquarters to Damascus. Warm spring weather during the day, cool  
enough at night to sleep comfortably. This stretch includes the High  
Country over Mt Rogers, Whitetop, and Iron Mountain, with dramatic  
open meadows, terrific views in all directions, and the company of  
wild horses. Closer to Damascus, the Trail runs through the Whitetop  
Laurel Gorge, where the hiker will find spectacular wildflowers and  
beautiful creek views.

May is the middle of songbird migration, and the ridgelines are full  
of neotropical migrants making their way north for the summer.  
Birders will want to bring binoculars and a field guide.
