If you want to avoid the crowds, at least as much as possible, post
Labor Day but
before "Leaf Peeping" is great, and as close as no bugs as you can get
outside of winter.
I havem't been up there in a while, but the bears have gotten bad
enough that a bear canister
is now required, they can be rented at the ADK Loj.
