[at-l] Bone Mass

A recent "Outside" Magazine article said regular bike riders who
took serious daily rides, as well as some pros, were surprised to find doctors
had discovered low bone mass and pre-osteoperosis in fit bikers. Some had the
bone density of persons 20 years their elder.

The article went on to describe how scientists discovered the body's
mechanism for producing better bone mass was triggered by impact levels above
that of bike riding. In other words, you can have excellent muscles and good
shape from regular bike riding, but still not trigger the body's mechanism for
producing denser bones. Jogging and rope jumping are two forms of exercise that
trigger the bone improving mechanism.

If that's the case, I'd imagine through-hiking to be the best
form of 'trigger'...
