As defined by you, of course.
Non-hiking spouses should simply accept
their fates. Hikers should continue to hitch,
blue-blaze, or walk to town, as they've done
since time immemorial.

Great. Recall that Thoreau was terrified
of the wilderness he found at Katahdin.
Let's consider a few numbers:
4,000,000: number of folks who set
foot on the AT in a year
3,000: number of folks starting
AT thru hikes in a year
400: number of folks completing
AT thru hikes in a year
That should put some perspective on
the Trail's purpose, I hope.
