       The 91,000 acre Babcock Ranch in SW Florida was deemed by 
conservationists to be the most critical tract in Florida for maintaining ecological 
balance and sustaining species and open space. It was just sold to a Palm Beach 
developer named Sydney Kitson who plans to develop it.


     The parcel was considered critical to the survival of the Florida 
Panther as a species. Local developer association leaders commented that the Panther 
was probably already doomed anyway.
