[at-l] Re: PBS was THE ATC & Membership therein - a bit longish

My idea of retirment travel is to never get on another interstate and to stop and read every sign, visit every state park, every national park, and every museum that looks faintly interesting.

LOL!

Brings back memories of a couple of coworkers of mine.

Coworker 1 always had great pictures to pass around the office after his
whirlwind, cross-country vacations. He was always talking about all the
places he had visited over the years.

Coworker 2 always went to the same beach, year after year.

One year, coworker 2 took coworker 1 up on his annual search for someone to
share expenses on one of his whirlwind, two week trips.

When they got back, coworker 2 was exhausted, need another vacation to rest
up, and was totally discussed. He said that they had spent 10 - 12 hours a
day driving, with the rest eating, sleeping, etc. He complained that they
never went in anywhere, never read any signs, never actually saw anything,
etc -- unless they could do it in a drive-by. As they entered a State, they
would collect bunches of handouts from the welcome center. They would stop at
an attraction, snap some pictures from the parking lot, or roadside pull-off,
if the attraction had hand-outs grab some, and be back on the road and on
their way in minutes. Once coworker 2 said he want to read a sign. Coworker
1 said that they would have plenty of time to read it in the pictures, or
brochure, once they got home.

As always HYOH -- but in this case don't invite me along.

Tourists do amazing things, like taking pictures of historic markers to read
later at home. If they took the time to read it on the spot, they might "see"
more in what they were looking at right then.
